Overview

Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon is a story on many levels. On the surface, the story revolves around Tsukino Usagi, a 14-year-old klutz, crybaby and underachiever, who is most startled to find that she can transform into the superhero, Sailor Moon. Throughout the series she discovers a large circle of friends, also sailor-suited superheros, and her love interest from the past (and future), Chiba Mamoru, who transforms into the only male superhero. (Lucky guy.) Together the senshi fight five seasons/arcs of villains and their feeble, second-rate minions, to preserve love, save the universe, and rescue Mamoru, who is painfully prone to brainwashing by the forces of evil.

Sailor Moon is a story aimed at young girls (4 to 12 years old), and can be considered a magical girl story. The manga is written by Takeuchi Naoko, and it is running in the monthly magazine Nakayoshi. However because of various reasons, Sailor Moon has gathered a lot of fans from people of all age groups, and has become one of the most popular anime in Japan (as of 1997). There is a Sailor Moon manga, a Sailor V manga, five TV series, three movies, several video games, and LOTS of merchandise.

Beyond this surficial look, BSSM is a rich series with deep themes of sacrifice, death and unconditional love. As the series progresses, there are deeper and deeper subplots, especially surrounding the outer senshi and characters which appear in later arcs and seasons. The characters are allowed to develop and mature over the course of the series, and Stars-season/arc Usagi is a far cry from her 14-year-old first-season/arc self; naturally some aspects of her personality remain, but beneath the surface she is battle-hardened and dedicated to her responsibilities as a soldier of love and justice.

For a very thorough grounding in the series, I suggest the Wikipedia article on BSSM — covering both the Japanese and North American anime and manga releases, as well as the games and live-action series. ^^;
